What a day. It’s safe to say Battle Cancer Belfast went off with a bang, and a huge one at that. It was a weekend that was a long time coming, and we were not prepared for just what an epic day it was, both in terms of fundraising efforts and the amazing atmosphere.
The sun was shining, and the stage was set at BLK BOX HQ for teams of 4 to battle their way through 4 x 9 minute functional fitness challenges. The atmosphere was electric with a live DJ pumping the tunes, getting everyone in the festival spirit. The community spirit was overwhelming, with teams cheering on and motivating their competitors when the workouts felt a little bit tough.
In total, 140 teams competed at our HQ, and raised an incredible £78,016.49 (& counting!) for 38 Cancer Charities across the UK and Ireland including Action cancer, Ashling Cancer, Battle Cancer Program, Breast Cancer Ireland, Cancer Focus NI, Cancer Fund for Children and Children's Cancer NI. What an amazing achievement! As hosts of the event and as partners of Battle Cancer, we thought it would be only right to compete ourselves, so 7 teams entered from BLK BOX. After all, our motto is Built for Athletes, by Athletes.
The money raised will help so many of those affected by cancer. Young Lives vs Cancer in particular provides specialist social work support to children, young people and their families when faced with a cancer diagnosis, throughout treatment and life afterwards. They provide Home from Home accommodation beside Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and The Northern Ireland Cancer Centre. The Home from Homes allow families and young people to stay, for free whenever they or their child is on treatment.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered, judged, donated, spectated, got us dancing, fed and watered us…it wouldn’t have been possible without you, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year!
