5 pieces of equipment you need in your home gym to be ready for anything

Katie McGonigle Katie McGonigle |

You don't need a massive space or a bottomless budget. You need the right five pieces. Get these right and your home gym can handle strength work, conditioning, skill work and everything in between.

Squat Rack

This is the non-negotiable. A squat rack lets you squat, press, and bench heavy without a spotter. It's the anchor point for your entire strength programme. Go for a rack with a pull-up bar on top and you've added another movement pattern without taking up an extra inch of floor space. BLK BOX racks are also built to take attachments, so as your training evolves, your rack evolves with it.

Look for a rack with adjustable J-hooks and safety arms so you can train heavy and train alone, safely.

Our best sellers for home gyms are 1 Series Mobile Squat Stands and 1 Series Folding Racks. If you have more space, consider upgrading to a Half Rack, Compact Rack, or Full Rack for added versatility and stability.

Barbell

One barbell opens up hundreds of movements. Squats, deadlifts, cleans, presses, rows, snatches. It's the most versatile piece of kit you can own. A quality Olympic barbell with good knurling and smooth rotating sleeves will last you a lifetime. Don't cut corners here.

A standard Olympic barbell pairs with your rack and plates to cover the vast majority of what you'll ever need to train.

Our Hybrid Bar covers all bases, with dual knurling for both Olympic lifts and power movements, giving you flexibility without compromise. Or, our top selling Belfast Bar. Perfect for everyday lifting, it’s built to last a lifetime and perform under pressure.

Bumper Plates

Bumper plates protect your floor and let you drop the bar when things get heavy or technical. Whether you're pulling from the floor or working on Olympic lifting, rubber bumpers are worth it in a home environment. Start with a decent spread of weights and add to them as you progress.

A good starting set covers you from light warm-up weights right through to working loads. Colour-coded makes life easier.

Adjustable Bench

A flat bench is fine. An adjustable bench is better. Incline pressing, decline work, seated dumbbell movements, step-ups. The ability to change the angle completely transforms what you can do with your barbell and dumbbells. Get one that's solid, doesn't wobble, and adjusts quickly.

Our 1 Series Adjustable Bench is compact, combining smart design with essential functionality making it ideal for home gyms.

Dumbbells or Kettlebells

A barbell does the heavy lifting but dumbbells and kettlebells cover everything it can't. Unilateral work, accessory movements, conditioning, warm-ups. If space is tight, a set of adjustable dumbbells gives you a full range in a small footprint. If you prefer kettlebells, a pair at different weights handles swings, carries and complexes without the need for much else.

You don't need both. Pick whichever suits how you train and get quality over quantity.

Hex dumbbells are ideal for conditioning and all round versatility. Premium Urethane Dumbbells are built for focused strength training with a more refined feel. Kettlebells are perfect for dynamic, functional movements that build power, coordination and endurance.
