Olympic, powerlifting, hybrid, technique, speciality and fixed barbells for home and commercial gyms, from the 2kg Studio Barbell to the 32kg Safety Squat Bar.
Barbells for Home and Commercial Gyms
A barbell is the centre of most strength programmes, used for squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead press, rows and the Olympic lifts. The BLK BOX range covers Olympic, powerlifting and hybrid barbells, technique and studio barbells, speciality barbells and fixed barbells, so each training space can match the barbell to the lifts, the users and the room. For a side-by-side overview, see the difference between the BLK BOX barbells.
Olympic Barbells
Our Olympic Barbells take Olympic plates and come in 20kg and 15kg versions. The 20kg Belfast Bar and Utility Bar use a 28mm shaft and the Power Bar a stiffer 29mm shaft, while the 15kg Belfast and Utility versions use a thinner 25mm shaft suited to smaller hands and Olympic lifting.
Belfast Bar: 20kg and 15kg Olympic Barbell
The Belfast Bar is our high-spec all-rounder, with over 120,000 sold. A black hardened chrome shaft, peaked diamond knurling and two needle bearings per sleeve give a smooth, controlled spin for Olympic lifts, strength work and functional training, from home gyms to elite facilities.
Hybrid Bar for Functional and CrossFit Training
The Hybrid Bar, in 20kg and 15kg with a black finish, combines four needle bearings and bronze bushings with a 190k PSI shaft and dual knurl markings. It has no centre knurl, which keeps high-rep cleans and front-rack work comfortable on the chest and neck.
Power Bar for Powerlifting
The Power Bar is a powerlifting barbell designed to IPF specifications for the squat, bench press and deadlift: a 29mm, 210k PSI shaft with virtually no whip, aggressive knurling with a centre knurl, IPF knurl marks, and bronze bushings for a slow, controlled spin.
Utility Bar: Entry-Level Olympic Barbell
The Utility Barbells are the entry point to the Olympic range, in 20kg and 15kg, with a 180k PSI shaft, roller bearings and bronze bushings, dual IWF and IPF knurl marks and a centre knurl for squats.
Stinger Bar: Short Barbell for Small Spaces
At 1.77m long and 15.86kg, the Stinger Bar is a short barbell for compact home gyms, with 1.2mm diamond knurling and two needle bearings per sleeve. Its length means it is not compatible with standard rigs and racks, so pair it with squat stands.
Technique and Studio Barbells
Our Technique Barbells include the 8kg Technique Bar, which has an anodised aluminium shaft, dual IPF and IWF knurl marks and an 80kg maximum load, for adults and juniors learning the lifts. The 2kg Studio Barbell is 1.5m long with a 30mm grip and pairs with Studio Plates and Collars for group classes in commercial studios, hotel gyms and boutique facilities.
Speciality Barbells
Our Speciality barbells change the movement pattern or reduce joint strain for specific lifts.
Hex Bar and Open Trap Bar for Deadlifts and Carries
The 28kg Hex Bar, also known as a trap bar, places the load in line with the body with a neutral grip, for deadlifts, farmer's walks and shrugs. The 23kg Open Hex Bar adds an open back for walking lunges and carries, an integrated loading jack, and 30mm and 50mm handles for grip work.
Curl Bar and Multi Grip Bar
The 9kg Curl Bar uses EZ-style angled grips to reduce wrist and elbow strain during curls and extensions, and is rated to 250kg. The Multi Grip Bar is a Swiss-style bar whose curved design and angled handles support bench press, overhead press and rows in a more natural wrist and shoulder position.
Safety Squat Bar and Tib Bar
The 32kg Safety Squat Bar lowers the load with a bent design, padded supports and forward-facing handles, and is rated to 350kg. The 2.65kg Tib Developer Bar, made in Belfast, trains the tibialis anterior using Olympic plates.
Fixed Barbells
Our Fixed Barbells need no loading or collars, which suits group classes and busy gym floors. The 12 Sided Fixed Barbell has anti-roll urethane heads on a steel core from 10kg to 50kg, and the Urethane Fixed Barbell has one-piece urethane ends that reduce noise and floor damage, from 10kg to 45kg.
Barbell Collars

What is the weight and length of a standard Olympic barbell?
A standard men’s Olympic barbell weighs 20kg and is 2.2m (7.2ft) long. A women’s Olympic barbell weighs 15kg and is 2.01m (6.6ft) long.
What is the difference between a 20kg and a 15kg barbell?
The 20kg barbell is thicker (28-29mm shaft) and designed for heavier loads, while the 15kg barbell has a thinner shaft (25mm) for better grip, particularly for Olympic weightlifting.
What is the difference between a general-purpose and Olympic lifting barbell?
A general-purpose barbell balances shaft stiffness, knurling and sleeve rotation so it can cover several styles of lifting. A more weightlifting-focused Olympic barbell prioritises smooth sleeve rotation and a grip specification suited to the snatch and clean and jerk, while a Power Bar is stiffer and more specialised for squat, bench and deadlift.
Which barbell should I buy for a home gym?
For a home gym, choose a barbell around the lifts you perform most often. The Belfast Bar is the main all-round option for everyday strength and Olympic-style training, the Utility Bar is an entry-level Olympic barbell, the Power Bar is more specific to squat, bench and deadlift work, and the Hybrid Bar is aimed at mixed functional training.
Will this barbell fit my rack and weight plates?
Check two things: the barbell’s rackable shaft width must safely span the rack J-Hooks, and the sleeves must use the same 50mm Olympic standard as the plates. Standard 7ft Olympic barbells are the simplest match for BLK BOX racks and 50mm plates; compact barbells need a specific rack-compatibility check.
How should I compare barbell grip, sleeves and load ratings?
Compare shaft diameter and knurling for grip, sleeve length for plate capacity, bearing or bushing system for rotation, and the stated maximum load or tensile specification for the exact model. These features should match the lifts you perform rather than being compared as isolated “higher is better” specifications.
How do shaft diameter and knurling affect the feel of the barbell?
A smaller shaft diameter generally gives a different grip feel and is common on weightlifting-oriented barbells, while thicker shafts can feel more rigid in the hands. Knurl pattern and aggressiveness affect grip security and comfort; use the model’s intended training style as the main guide rather than shaft diameter alone.
Can I use a shorter barbell in a small room without losing rack compatibility?
Only if the shorter barbell still has enough rackable shaft width for your rack. The Stinger Bar is a compact barbell for smaller spaces but is specifically noted as not compatible with standard rigs and racks, so a shorter overall length can reduce rack compatibility.
How much loadable sleeve length does this barbell provide?
Loadable sleeve length is model-specific and directly affects how many bumper or iron plates can be fitted. Check the barbell specification and compare the usable sleeve length with the actual thickness of your plates, leaving room for collars.
Is this barbell intended for dropping during Olympic lifting?
Use a barbell designed for the type of lifting and dropping you plan to do. Barbells with bearing systems are better suited to repeated Olympic lifts, but the permitted use and warranty still depend on the exact model, loading and plates used. Do not assume every Olympic-diameter barbell is intended for overhead drops.
How should I choose between the available barbell finishes for my environment?
Choose the finish for grip, corrosion resistance and maintenance in your environment. Keep any barbell dry and clean, and expect finishes to wear differently where the barbell contacts J-Hooks, hands and plates. Product-specific shaft and sleeve materials should take priority over appearance alone.
How do I clean and maintain the shaft and sleeves?
Brush chalk and debris from the knurling, wipe the shaft and apply a light coat of oil as required, then store the barbell in a dry environment to reduce corrosion. Keep sleeves free of dirt and inspect rotation if the barbell uses bearings or bushings.
Are collars included with the barbell?
Collars are not automatically listed with a standalone barbell. Some BLK BOX gym bundles include Lock Jaw Collars, so check the exact product contents and add collars separately where required.
Which training uses are covered by the manufacturer's warranty?
Warranty depends on the exact barbell and intended use, so check the product-specific terms before buying for specialist training. BLK BOX’s general warranty excludes damage from misuse, normal wear, improper maintenance, alteration or use outside the intended conditions.
Do you sell a black barbell?
Yes. The Hybrid Bar has a black finish in both 20kg and 15kg. The Belfast Bar pairs a black hardened chrome shaft with hardened chrome sleeves. For classes, the 2kg Studio Barbell has a black finish. The Open Hex Bar has a textured matte black powder-coated frame.
Do you sell a light barbell?
Yes. The Studio Barbell weighs just 2kg. It is 1.5m long with a 30mm diameter, pairs with our Studio Plates and Collars, and is built for busy commercial studios, hotel gyms and boutique fitness facilities, and ideal for fast-paced classes. For learning the lifts, the 8kg Technique Bar has IPF and IWF knurl marks and an 80kg maximum load. The Belfast, Utility and Hybrid bars also come in 15kg versions.
Which barbells suit a commercial gym?
The Belfast Bar is our high-spec all-rounder, with over 120,000 units sold, and a go-to choice for home gyms, commercial facilities and elite training spaces. For group training, the 12-sided fixed barbell is built for commercial gyms, PT studios and high-traffic spaces, and its anti-roll heads keep it in place between sets. The urethane fixed barbell's one-piece ends reduce noise and the risk of floor damage. Metalwork on BLK BOX manufactured items is covered by a lifetime structural guarantee.
Do your barbells have bearings or bushings, and what’s the difference?
Bearings (needle or ball bearings) allow the sleeves to spin smoothly, ideal for Olympic weightlifting.
Bushings (brass or composite) provide a controlled rotation, making them great for powerlifting and multipurpose training.
BLK BOX offers barbells with both systems, depending on their intended use.
Buying Guide
Buying the right Barbell for your gym and training style
Every strength setup starts with the bar. Whether you are building a home gym, fitting out a commercial facility, or upgrading an elite performance training space, the right barbell defines how you train day to day.
A quality barbell is built from high tensile steel to handle repeated loading without compromise. Shaft diameter, knurling, whip, sleeve rotation, and finish all influence how the bar performs under pressure. The right choice comes down to how you train, how often you train, and the environment it sits in.
Core Training Barbells
Core barbells form the foundation of most training environments, built for daily use across strength, functional fitness, and athletic development.
The Belfast Bar is a trusted all-rounder designed for Olympic lifting, strength work, and high volume training. With dual knurl markings and a balanced 28mm shaft, it delivers a consistent feel across multiple training styles. The omission of centre knurl improves comfort during dynamic and repetitive sessions.
The Utility Bar is an entry-level Olympic bar designed for versatility. Built to IWF standards with a 28mm shaft and centre knurl, it supports foundational strength work across squats, presses, and pulls. Finished in hardened chrome for durability, it is a dependable option for beginners and general training environments.
The Hybrid Bar is built for functional and CrossFit-style training where movements vary from session to session. Designed for versatility and durability, it performs across Olympic lifting, strength circuits, and mixed programming environments.
The Power Bar is a competition-style bar built for maximal strength work. With a stiffer 29mm shaft, minimal whip, aggressive knurling, and bronze bushings, it is engineered for squats, bench press, and deadlifts where stability under load is critical.
The Stinger Bar is a compact Olympic bar designed for space-conscious training environments. It delivers full performance in a reduced length format, making it ideal for home gyms and smaller facilities. Due to its size, it requires squat stands rather than full racks or rigs.
Speciality Barbells
Speciality bars are designed to support specific movement patterns, reduce joint strain, and expand training variation beyond standard barbell work.
The Curl Bar is engineered to reduce stress on the wrists and elbows during arm training. Its angled grip promotes a more natural hand position, while smooth spinning sleeves support controlled movement through curls and extensions.
The Hex Bar places the load in line with the body to create a more natural lifting position. This reduces stress on the lower back and joints, making it ideal for deadlifts, carries, and shrug variations. Dual handle heights allow for progression and variation.
The Open Hex Bar expands movement options beyond traditional pulling work. Its open frame allows easy entry and enables lunges, carries, and dynamic loaded movements. Integrated jack points support fast plate changes for efficient training flow.
The Multi Grip Bar improves pressing mechanics by offering multiple hand positions and a curved frame that reduces joint strain. Ideal for bench press, overhead press, and rowing variations, it supports upper body strength development with improved comfort.
The Urethane Fixed Barbell is a durable, low-maintenance solution for high-traffic gyms. With a one-piece design and protective urethane coating, it reduces noise, protects flooring, and supports fast-paced training environments across all ability levels.
Key Considerations When Choosing a Barbell
Training Style
Olympic lifting and functional fitness are best supported by Belfast, Stinger, or Hybrid bars. Power-focused programming suits the Power Bar. Accessory and rehab work benefits from speciality bars designed for specific movement patterns.
Environment
Commercial gyms should prioritise durability, corrosion resistance, and high cycle performance. Home gyms may focus more on versatility, compact options, and noise control.
Athlete Level
Beginners benefit from versatile, forgiving bars with balanced knurl and controlled whip. Advanced athletes may require more specialised bars tailored to their discipline and performance demands.
