Everything You Should Know Before Starting CrossFit

If you’re thinking about trying CrossFit, you’re not alone. Thousands of people walk into a box (CrossFit gym) every year looking for a challenge that pushes both mind and body. CrossFit can look intense from the outside, but at its core it’s about progress, not perfection. Here’s everything you need to know before you get started.
What to Bring
You don’t need much for your first class. Comfortable training clothes, a water bottle, and a positive attitude. Flat-soled trainers are best for stability during lifts, but any supportive shoe will do at the start. Some people bring grips or a skipping rope and grips later on, but those can come once you’ve settled in.
Reserve Your Spot
Most CrossFit gyms ask you to book into class beforehand, either through their website or an app. It helps coaches manage numbers and give everyone the right attention. If you’re unsure, send your gym a quick message, they’ll be happy to help.
Show Up Early
Arrive about ten minutes early. It gives you time to sign in, meet the coach, and get a feel for the space. Walking into a new gym can be intimidating, but everyone there remembers what their first class felt like.
Meet Your Coach
Your coach will guide you through the session and explain everything you need to know. If you have any injuries or movement limitations, let them know at the start so they can scale your workout appropriately. Every CrossFit movement can be modified to suit your ability.
What Does a CrossFit Class Look Like?

Classes usually follow a clear structure, so you’ll never feel lost:
Whiteboard Brief: The coach gathers everyone to explain the session, movements, and scaling options.
Warm-Up: Dynamic drills to prepare your body for the workout.
Skill Practice: Time to work on a lift or movement with coaching cues.
Workout Prep: Setting up equipment and testing your movements.
Workout (WOD): The main session, often short and intense but adaptable for all levels.
Cleanup: Everyone helps tidy the equipment.
Fist Bump: The unspoken rule at the end of every class.

Track Your Progress
Most gyms use an app to record your scores and track your lifts and workout times. It’s a great way to see your progress and celebrate the small wins that build up over time.
Connect with Your Classmates
CrossFit is built on community. Say hello to the person next to you, cheer each other on, and share that post-workout high. The people in your class will often become a big part of why you keep showing up.
Keep an Open Mind
CrossFit isn’t just about lifting heavy or going fast. It’s about learning new skills, testing limits, and building strength that translates to everyday life. Be patient, stay consistent, and remember that everyone started somewhere.
