Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between bumper plates, competition plates, and cast iron plates?

Bumper Plates – Made from high-density rubber, designed for Olympic lifting and dropping.
Competition Bumper Plates – IWF standard sizing, lower bounce, and more precise calibration.
Cast Iron Plates – Traditional steel plates for powerlifting and bodybuilding, not designed for dropping.

Are your bumper plates suitable for Olympic weightlifting?

Yes! Our Competition Bumper Plates and BLK BOX HD Bumper Plates are built for Olympic lifts, providing a low-bounce and high-durability solution.

Do your weight plates fit all standard Olympic barbells?

Yes. All BLK BOX plates have a 50mm center hole, designed to fit standard Olympic barbells.

Are your weight plates drop-tested?

Yes. Our bumper plates are rigorously drop-tested to ensure they withstand repeated impact from overhead lifts.

Are your plates suitable for outdoor use?

While bumper plates can withstand outdoor use, prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions may affect durability.

Which weight plates should I buy for my home gym?

For a home gym, bumper plates are the most versatile choice if Olympic lifts or controlled dropping are part of your training. Grip or iron-style plates can be more space-efficient for machines and slower strength work, but they are not the right choice for repeated drops. All current BLK BOX weight plates use a 50mm centre hole for standard Olympic bars.

What is the difference between bumper and grip plates?

Bumper plates use a rubber construction designed to absorb impact and are intended for barbell lifting where the bar may be dropped. Grip plates prioritise easy handling and compact plate loading for strength machines, racks and general resistance work, appropriate for when dropping is not required.

Will these plates fit my barbell and plate-loaded machines?

Yes. BLK BOX plates use a 50mm centre hole for standard Olympic barbells and Olympic-size plate-loaded equipment. Always confirm the machine’s sleeve diameter if it is not a BLK BOX product.

Are weight plates sold individually, in pairs or as a set?

Sale format varies by product. Some plates are sold individually, while others are available as itemised sets such as 100kg or 150kg bumper sets. Check the variant name and set contents before ordering so you know whether the displayed quantity is one plate, a pair or a complete set.

Which plate combinations give me the loading increments I want?

Build the plate mix around the smallest loading change you need and the heaviest working weight. Use fractional or smaller plates for fine progression, then larger 10kg, 15kg, 20kg and 25kg plates for efficient loading. For a commercial gym, include enough duplicate working weights to avoid stripping every bar between users.

Will these plates fit my existing weight tree?

BLK BOX plates use 50mm centres, but storage fit also depends on the peg diameter, usable peg length and plate thickness. Measure the storage sleeve and compare it with the selected plate specification rather than assuming every 50mm plate tree has the same capacity.

How many plates will fit on the available sleeve length?

The number of plates that fit is determined by loadable sleeve length divided by the actual thickness of the selected plates, while leaving enough space for the collar. Bumper plates are thicker than many grip or iron plates, so compare the exact plate thickness with your bar or machine sleeve before buying a large set.

Which plate types are permitted for dropping during training?

Use bumper plates for training where the bar is designed to be dropped. BLK BOX bumper plates are drop-tested for Olympic lifting, while cast iron or grip-style plates are not intended to be used as dropping plates.

How do the available plate materials differ for handling and care?

Rubber bumper plates reduce impact and protect equipment during dropped lifts, while urethane provides a durable premium finish and grip or iron plates are generally denser for compact loading. Care should match the material, keep plates clean and dry, avoid unnecessary impact on non-drop plates and store them on suitable pegs or shelves.

What weight tolerance does the manufacturer specify?

Weight tolerance is product-specific. Utility Bumper Plates list a +/-0.8% tolerance, while other ranges list their own figures, from +/-10g on Competition Change Plates to +/-1% on Urethane Plates. Check the exact plate specification when tolerance matters rather than applying one figure across the full weight-plate range.

Is a plate set better value than buying the same plates separately?

Compare the set price with the combined price of the same individual plate variants. Sets can simplify ordering and may offer value, but the best choice depends on whether the set contains the exact weight distribution you need rather than extra plates you will rarely use.

How will a heavy plate order be packaged and delivered?

Heavy plate orders may ship by parcel or pallet depending on the total size and weight. Check the order’s delivery method and make sure the delivery point can accept a heavy consignment, particularly for commercial quantities or large bumper sets.

Buying Guide

Picking the right weight plates for your strength training routine.

Buyers guide to choosing the right weight plates for home commercial and elite gyms.

Choosing the right weight plates comes down to your training style, environment, and long-term goals. Whether you're equipping a home gym, upgrading a commercial facility, or supporting elite athletes, the right plates provide precise weight, reliable barbell performance, and long-lasting durability for every training session.

What to Look for in Good Weight Plates

High quality weight plates should deliver accuracy, durability, and consistent performance. Plates calibrated to their stated weight help track progress with confidence, while high grade rubber and urethane improve longevity and withstand repeated lifting and drops. Low bounce enhances safety by reducing movement on impact, and shock absorbing materials help minimise noise and vibration in home gyms and shared training spaces. Colour coding and clear weight markings also make loading quicker and improve organisation.
