Inside the Build: Train Yard, Wapping
Train Yard’s facility in Wapping, London, came with a few hurdles. Uneven flooring, awkward pillars down the middle of the room, and a ceiling full of pipework meant this wasn’t a simple plug-and-play gym install. But that’s exactly the kind of challenge we like.
It was also their first time working with BLK BOX, so we wanted to deliver a space that not only worked - but worked well for their team, their members, and their mission.
Making the Space Work
1. Starting with the floor: The existing floor had a raised section that wasn’t part of our scope, but we advised the client to take it out and re-screed to give them a solid, long-lasting foundation. That decision paid off—it gave us a clean, level base to build from.
2. Dealing with pillars: The space had a pretty irregular shape, with large pillars running right down the middle. We had to be really smart about where we placed things to avoid clutter and keep the gym feeling open and easy to move through.
3. Low ceilings? No problem: The ceiling was packed with ducting and pipework, which limited the height we could work with. That ruled out some of the taller equipment, so we focused on compact, versatile kit that wouldn’t get in the way of overhead space or airflow.
What We Installed
- BLK BOX 1 Series Rack: Compact, durable, and ideal for strength training in tight spaces.
- BLK BOX Gym Dog Sled: Perfect for pushing and pulling without taking up too much room.
- BLK BOX Basecamp Storage Rack (Loaded): Keeps everything organised and easy to access.
- BLK BOX 3-in-1 Soft Plyo Jump Box: Gives variety for plyo work while staying low profile.
- BLK BOX Anti-Slip Tiles: Tough, grippy flooring that holds up to sled work and heavy lifts.
A Gym That Fits the Train Yard Way
Train Yard’s approach to fitness is all about long-term results—not quick fixes. They offer a mix of strength classes, circuits, high-intensity training and Pilates, all delivered by expert coaches in a welcoming space.
This install supports that perfectly:
- The 1 Series Rack anchors structured strength sessions.
- The open floor gives space for sled pushes, plyo work and group circuits.
- Everything is laid out to keep things flowing smoothly, with no clutter or compromise.
Final Result
Despite the layout challenges, we helped Train Yard turn a tricky space into a versatile training environment. It’s functional, flexible, and designed to grow with them.
For us, this build proved that with the right planning and kit, there’s no such thing as an awkward space—just opportunities to get creative.
