BLK BOX Hosts Women’s Strength Workshop for new PTs

We recently partnered with PureGym to deliver a hands-on workshop in their new Women’s Workout Space in Manchester. Leading the session was Jayne Lo, BLK BOX Business Development Manager and an experienced coach with over 12 years in the industry.

The aim was simple: give PureGym’s personal trainers the tools to coach women with confidence from the very start of their careers. Many of the group were brand-new PTs, only a few months into the job, so Jayne focused on the practical basics that matter most: running effective movement screens, knowing when to progress or regress exercises, and using simple coaching cues that beginners actually understand.

Alongside practical tips, Jayne highlighted why strength training is so important for women. “As we age, the risks of osteoporosis and falls increase,” she explained. “Lifting weights strengthens joints, muscles and ligaments, and helps people stay independent for longer. It’s not just about building muscle, it’s about long-term health.”

She also took time to address common misconceptions, including the fear many women still have of ‘getting too bulky’. “It’s a myth,” she told the group. “Women don’t have the same testosterone levels as men. To build serious muscle takes years of training, high protein intake and consistency. Strength training should feel accessible, not intimidating.”

For those just starting out, her advice was clear: seek guidance early. “Work with a coach and learn the basics properly. Too many people jump between online workouts without structure, which makes it harder to progress. Even a simple starter plan from a coach can make a big difference.”

We were glad to be part of the day, giving new PTs the tools and confidence to coach strength training from the start.
