Inside the Build: Gymbox Finsbury Park

When Gymbox set out to open its newest site in Finsbury Park, the brief was clear: deliver a high-spec, immersive training space in a mixed-use building without compromising on noise control, performance, or aesthetics. That’s where BLK BOX came in.

Working closely with the Gymbox team, architects, and acoustic consultants, we developed and installed a full flooring solution that tackled one of the toughest challenges in modern gym design: acoustics in inner-city, multi-use developments.

Built from the Ground Up

With commercial neighbours above and below, including offices and cafés, Gymbox needed more than standard flooring. It needed a system that could absorb vibration, reduce sound transmission, and still perform under the demands of daily group training, Olympic lifting, and heavy footfall.

Our Business Development Manager, Dan Savin, who leads on complex flooring projects, guided the process from acoustic testing through to installation.

"Every person on a treadmill, every dropped dumbbell - it all creates reverberation. Especially in city gyms, flooring isn’t just a finish, it’s a foundation," says Dan.

After extensive testing both in-house and on-site using recognised acoustic standards, a low-profile system was chosen - just 49mm in total build-up. The system combined Getzner’s high-performance shock-absorbing materials with our own Fusion finish roll, creating a floor that felt firm underfoot for training, while significantly reducing structural noise.

Tested, Proven, Trusted

To make the right call, we tested five systems, using a 24kg kettlebell dropped from 0.5m to simulate real-world training impact. The chosen system - System 1.0 - delivered an acoustic reduction of over 20 decibels versus a standard concrete slab, without compromising athlete performance.

The final build-up included:

  • 25mm Getzner acoustic layer

  • Stability layer to evenly distribute load

  • 15mm shock pad

  • 15mm Fusion rubber roll finish

All designed to create a safe, quiet, and high-performing surface across the facility.

“There are plenty of acoustic floors that absorb sound well but fail the performance test for athletes. We’re solving both,” explains Dan.

More Than Just Flooring

Beyond the acoustic system, BLK BOX also delivered:

  • Custom Inlaid Lifting Platforms – seamlessly integrated into the floor

  • Turf Track – built in, not laid on top

  • Ceiling-Mounted Pull-Up Bars – for group training and gymnastic work

  • Tailored Storage Solutions – for both the main gym and studio spaces

Everything was designed to maximise functionality and maintain the Gymbox aesthetic.

Collaboration at the Core

This project was the result of deep collaboration across multiple disciplines. From architects and engineers to Gymbox’s in-house team, we worked together to ensure the solution was not only technically sound but aligned with the brand's vision.
