When Munster Rugby set out to create their new Centre of Excellence in Cork city, the ambition was clear. Create a high performance environment that supports the long term development of academy athletes while strengthening the future of rugby in the province.

BLK BOX partnered with Munster Rugby as the gym equipment provider and performance space designer, delivering a strength and conditioning facility built for progression, purpose and flow.
The Facility

The new Centre of Excellence features:
-
A world class indoor rugby dome
-
A 50 x 40 metre training pitch
-
A 2,500 sq ft high performance gym

The gym sits at the heart of the performance pathway, supporting academy squads of 20 to 30 developing athletes at a time. Every element of the space was carefully considered to ensure it could handle squad based training efficiently while maintaining coaching oversight and athlete safety.
The Brief

Munster Rugby required a space that would:
-
Accommodate full academy squad strength and conditioning sessions
-
Allow smooth transitions between stations
-
Support long-term athletic development
-
Reflect the identity and standards of the club
-
Maximise training output within a 2,500 sq ft footprint
The design centred on efficiency and usability. With full academy squads training at the same time, the layout had to support smooth movement between stations, clear coaching sight lines and logical equipment zoning.
The Solution

BLK BOX worked closely with the Munster performance staff to map typical training sessions and athlete movement patterns.
Key Equipment Installed
To meet the physical demands of elite rugby development, the facility includes:

5 Series Nexus Compact/ Full Combo Racks with custom branded red plates

Each piece was selected to align with the physical profile required in modern rugby, prioritising strength, power, robustness and resilience.
Built for Long Term Development

This is not a commercial gym. It is a performance environment built for purpose. The academy phase is critical in bridging the gap between youth and senior professional rugby. The equipment selection supports progressive overload, technical competency and position specific strength development. From foundational movement patterns with technique plates through to advanced barbell work in the Nexus racks, the space grows with the athlete.
Martin Voster, Business Development Manager who helped bring the facility to life, said:
“Munster were clear on what the space needed to deliver. It had to support full academy squads, high intensity sessions and long term athletic development, all within a tight footprint. Our focus was on getting the layout right, making sure the equipment selection matched the demands of modern rugby, and creating a space that works day in, day out for coaches and players.”
